Good morning,
Really, I’m just saying hi and letting you know about a few forms of summer entertainment that might interest you—and asking for your recommendations as well.
I’ll be at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT this Thursday, July 9, from 4:30-6pm ready to mingle, share my homemade cookies and maybe mini cakes (I haven’t 100% decided what I’ll make; let me know if you have requests.) You can register for the event (I believe it’s required!) here.
On Saturday, July 18, Milton Market in Litchfield, CT is hosting two paper-flower-making workshops led by Livia Cetti of The Green Vase. I’ve long admired Cetti’s creations, which you may recognize from John Derian’s shops, and a friend and I had a blast at one of these Milton Market-hosted workshops last February.
Three TV mysteries/thrillers(?)—with varying levels of gore, the supernatural, and Matthey Rhys—I’ve enjoyed in recent weeks are Widow’s Bay (Apple), Death Comes to Pemberley (PBS/Prime), and Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed (Apple).
Now, I’d like to ask for your recommendations.
Devon, UK: I’ll soon be heading to South Devon, in the UK, for the first time. Do you know the area, and is there anything you highly recommend I do/see/eat there?
Books: I’m currently reading Douglas Stuart’s latest novel, John of John. It takes place on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. In another book I happened to pluck from a shelf last week, I was struck by this line: “[People] want an island in which the world will be at last a place circumscribed by visible horizons. They want to love free of a continuity of roads, and other places.”1 I’m curious: do you happen to have a recommendation for a good novel set on an island?

If you can fit in North Devon, do visit Bude, which is the quintessential English seasiide small town, with a museum dedicated to a fascinating local inventor, a lovely beach, canal, and windsurfing. North Devon is also the location of the Hartland Peninsula (https://www.hartlandpeninsula.co.uk/) - abbey, glorious countryside and uncrowded roads. The RHS garden at Rosemoor is another gem.
And the only thing I want to learn now is how to make those paper peonies.
